PRESENT DAY IMPORTANCE
Our lives were forever changed by the events of September
11, 2001. Our greatest threat now appears to be bio-terrorism. Authorities
are worried about being able to produce anti-biotic agents which would be
effective against terrorist's germs, and whether or not such agents could
be made generally available. Unfortunately, authorities are over-looking
our greatest ally in the fight against pathogenic organisms -- our own immune
system, which is designed to counter-act and destroy invading germs. Our
immune system can be fortified by proper nutrition, as outlined in Chapter
1 of "Structured Healing," and our immune system can be supported
by Osteopathic treatment, as discussed in Chapter 13.
The greatest biological crisis the world has suffered
was the "black death" plague of the 14th century, when an estimated
60 million people died. Second worst was the 1918-1919 flu epidemic of World
War 1, when an estimated 30 million people died world-wide, and over 500,000
in the United States. Mortality rates were 30-40% in Medical Hospitals,
where treatment was cough syrup and aspirin. The mortality rate under Osteopathic
care in over 110,000 cases was 1/4th of one percent, where treatment was
cough syrup and Osteopathic treatment. This is dramatic evidence of how
the immune system can be supported.
